A computer network is a network of computing devices interconnected for sharing data with each other. Computer network types can be categorized on the basis of size, geographical span, structure, and purpose. So, we have listed some types of computer networks:

1. Local Area Network (LAN)
A Local Area Network or LAN is a famous network type and is most frequently used one. Moreover, a LAN is a network that connects different computing and peripheral devices in a limited span of area, for example, the building of an office, school, home, or library.
Mainly, there are two main technologies involved in LAN are, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. Furthermore, communication in LAN could be carried out with the help of wires or it can be wireless. And LAN in terms of speed is a relatively faster network. Also, LAN offers a facility to use a single internet connection among all LAN users.
2. Wide Area Network (WAN)
A WAN is a network type that covers a wide or large geographical area with the help of shared communication mediums. Moreover, a WAN is simply a network of LANs and MANs connected through some communication medium. For example, the Internet is the most common form of WAN.
WAN uses communication mediums, for example, Optic Fibre, Microwaves, and Satellites. Also, WAN is the largest network amongst all computer network types in terms of the geographical area it covers.
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A MAN is another type of network that is larger than a LAN. In fact, MAN is a network of different LANs throughout a larger geographical area such as an entire city, town, or metropolitan area. Moreover, many companies and Government Institutes use this type of network to connect their sub-offices in a city.
4. Virtual Private Network (VPN)
A Virtual Private Network or VPN is a network that extends a private network across the public network. VPN provides a secure and encrypted environment to its users.
